CUB ADVENTURE WEEKEND!

April 24-26 and May 1-3 mark Cub Adventure Weekend. This is a great event for the entire family. Your Pack, Den or family can sign up and be a part of two nights of camping at beautiful Camp Comer. March Pack Meeting

The pack meeting for March will be a bit different. We will start earlier (6:00) and it will be at a different location (St. Mark Methodist church). We will be having a fish fry and all are invited! To have a fish fry we will need to catch some fish. See below for the details on fishing and the Pack meeting. Note this is the meeting were the Webelo II Scouts cross over to become Boy Scouts. As part of that, the boys who have earned the Arrow of Light award will be honored in a special ceremony.

To plan this event, please let your den leader know how many adults and kids are coming.


The details for the fishing are as follows:

When: Saturday, March 7, 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (come by anytime during this period and stay as your schedule permits)

What: Fishing at Grant Street Catfish Pond, Bessemer, Exit #1 off I-459Bring: Fishing rod with at least 15-pound test line (normal is 10) and a 5-gallon bucket (they have some buckets) or a stringer.

Cost: Filet $2.25 per pound (please donate for the Blue and Gold Banquet)Wear: Pack t-shirt

Look for: There will be prizes at the Blue and Gold Banquet for "special fish" - largest, most pounds caught, and maybe more.

All scouts of Pack 393 (including family members) are invited to participate in a fun day of fishing, followed by an evening fish fry and Blue & Gold Banquet at St Mark United Methodist Church.

Fishing will be at the Grant Street Catfish Farm and Pond. Their number is 205-481-9999. Directions: I-459 South towards Tuscaloosa and take exit #1. Go right at the exit for approximately 1.25 miles and take a left at Grant Street. The entrance will be on your left. Our group will have their own (non-public) fenced pond for the day.

How the Event Will Work: Each boy (and family member) is asked to participate by fishing at the Grant Street Catfish Pond in Bessemer. Per Grant Street rules, you are to keep and pay for all fish caught. The Grant Street Catfish staff will fillet your fish and charge you $2.25/lb on the whole fish weight. Please donate your catfish fillets this will defer the cost of purchasing fish.

You may also want to bring: Chairs, fishing pliers, extra tackle, landing net, cooler w/ice, drinks, snacks, and sunscreen.

What If It Rains: The event is on rain or shine.Blue & Gold Banquet

Our first summertime activity is Wednesday of next week - Wednesday, June 11, Movie and Popcorn at Discovery “Alvin and the Chipmunks“. Come enjoy a Movie and Popcorn with your son, 7:00-9:00 p.m. (bring pillow and sleeping bag/blankets).

Our second summertime activity will be Ice Skating at Pelham Civic Complex Date TBD 9-11 am (both rinks may be down is why we have not set the date).

For our third summertime activity you can do either or both:

•Camp Sequoyah Resident Overnight Camp July 13, 14, and 15 (Sun-Tues) $90
•Day Camp the week of July 21-25 (M-F) at Oak Mountain State Park $60 by June 30

"WHACKY" WEDNESDAY - The National Scout Shops will be Whacking prices each 3rd Wednesday of the month during 2008. Check out "Whacky" Wednesday at your local Scout Shop - some items will be cut as much as 60%. Items must be in stock to qualify for sale price.


PINEWOOD DERBY NEWS- The Greater Alabama Council Pinewood Derby will be May 10, 2008 at Barber Motorsports Park & Museum in Leeds. Registration begins at 10:30 and racing begins at 11:15. The Derby is for First Place District winners only at no charge. Trophies will be awarded in Tiger, Cub (Wolf and Bear), Webelos, and “Show Only” categories. Soft drinks and concessions will be on sale. Rules and specifications for the GAC Pinewood Derby are the same as those found in the Official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby kit. These rules and specifications are:

CAR SPECIFICATIONS: Width- 2 and 3/4 inches; Length- 7 inches; Weight- not over 5 ounces; Width between wheels- 13/4 inches; Bottom clearance between the car and track- 3/8 inch.

RULES: Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited. The car shall not ride on springs. Only Official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby wheels and axles are permitted. Only Dry lubricant is permitted. Details, such as steering wheel and driver are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width and weight specifications. The car must be free wheeling, with no starting devices. Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it may compete. If, at registration, a car does not pass inspection, the owner will be informed of the reason for failure, and will be given time within the official weigh-in time period to make the adjustment. After final approval, cars will not be reinspected unless the car is damaged in handling or in a race.
Along with these rules and specifications we ask that all Cubs and adults participate with a Scouting Spirit, a sense of fair play, and sportsmanship.


2008 Barons Scout Night

What: Baseball game to enjoy for the whole family and camp out on the field at Regions Park

Where: Regions Park (AKA-Hoover Met)

When: Saturday, May 3rd (Gates open at 5:30 PM/Game starts at 7:05 PM)

Cost: $10 per ticket for Homerun package /$6 for general admission

Other: All Scouts will receive a patch

Family Fun Zone & Outdoor Show at BJCC - The following is not a scout sponsored event, but a FLW representative made a presentation on this at the Scout Leaders Roundtable meeting. They are looking for scouts to attend in uniform. Scouts will be recognized on the main stage at 3:30 on Sunday (their website is www.fantasyfishing.com, but I did not see it had any info on the local events).

Childersburg, AL, Saturday, March 1. Arrive at 10:00 am (42.8 mi – about 53 minutes)

Cost $33 ($30 for the Happy day - unlimited attractions and cave tour and $3 for camping - primitive – bring own tent and sleeping bag). Note there are close hotels.

Attractions: Lost trail maze, Potty Racers, Panning for Gemstones, Pedal go-carts, Wacky Water Golf, and more.

What If It Rains: The event is on rain or shine. If we cannot fish due to lightening or severe rain, we will notify everyone.

We will have 3 activities this summer. The first will be a Hoover movie (June 29 – see below). The second will be scout day camp (July 23-27 please coordinate applications with your Den Leader) or overnight camp (your Den Leader will select a date July 8-10 or July 11-13). The third will be ice skating at the Pelham Civic Complex (date in August to be determined as it gets closer). If your boy completes all three activities he will get a gold summertime activity pin that he can wear on his uniform. Also if you have a young boy who will be a Tiger scout next year and he attends all three he can also get the summertime activity pen.

What: Charlotte's Web movie (rated G) under the stars

When: Friday, June 29 at dusk (around 8:15 PM)

Where: Hoover’s Veteran's Park near Spain Park High School (4700 Valleydale RdHoover, AL)

What to bring: Chair, picnic, popcorn/snack, and flashlight!

There will be a movie outside at Hoover park in June (the schedule of movies has not been posted to select a movie), ice skating at the Pelham Civic Complex (probably in early July) and Day camp (July 23-27) or overnight camp (July 8-10 and July 11-13) as the third summertime activity.

This is the basic information for overnight camp - July 8-10 and July 11-13. Cub Resident Camp is a three-day and two-night adventure at Camp Sequoyah. Cost of Cub Resident Camp is $85.00 per camper. One leader is required for every four campers and one leader may attend free with every four campers.
