February 14, 2005 Pack Meeting Update

Folks, we have a great Pack Meeting planned for Monday February 14 at Discovery beginning at 7 p.m.. We will:

  • recognize all the Pinewood Derby winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd).
  • have the boys voting on cars in creative categories such as "Most Cool Looking"
  • watch an awesome program from McWane Center, SCIENCE WITH A BANG!
  • plus include the usual fun meeting activities

Please note that the McWane Center program will cause our meeting to extend beyond its normal 60-minute length by approximately 15 minutes but the time should be well worth it. There will also be information about our active spring activities coming up that you won't want to miss so I hope I see you all there at Discovery!

2005 Pinewood Derby Results:

I would like to thank all the parents for working with their boys to make yesterday's Pinewood Derby a tremendous success. Over 100 different cars raced down the track for nearly 8 hours of fun and excitement. It would not have been possible without the number of dedicated volunteers led by our Pinewood Derby Chairman, Clyde Tucker, who helped with the Friday night check-in and Saturday racing.

Here are the race results by den and the boys will be recognized at the February 14 Pack meeting. All cars will be held until the Pack meeting so that the boys can vote on cars for creative categories such as "Most Cool Looking" or "Most Patriotic" (as examples). Names are listed in order of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Here are announcements to prepare for the January 10, 2005 Pack meeting:

1. We are back at Discovery this month! See everyone at 7 p.m. :>)
2. Wolves and Bear Cubs have one more chance to sign up for the "God & Me" religous medal. The program will run 6-8 weeks on one afternoon each week at Discovery. Not required for anything but "nice to have".
3. I hope you have begun working on your Pinewood Derby racers. Remember that we encourage you to decorate it with a theme related to Cub Scouting's 75th anniversary.
4. The Pinewood Derby will be Saturday, January 29 at Discovery. Check-in for race cars is Friday night, January 28 from 6-8 p.m. at Deer Valley Elementary School in the lobby area. We encourage everyone to check in Friday night; limited check-in will be available Saturday morning but that time is very hectic!
5. Follow the rules included with your Derby racer. Key is no total weight over 5 ounces, use the nail/wheel grooves provided in your block of wood, nothing to0 high to hit our overhead finish line bridge; nothing extending over the front of the car. Do not modify the wheels and use all parts provided in your kit.
6. We have a special treat planned for our February 14 Pack meeting. You will not want to miss it!
7. We still need more volunteers for our Pinewood Derby in January, Blue & Gold Banquet in March, and our Pack overnighter in April. Any time you can contribute is greatly appreciated.

Yours in Cub Scouting,
Ed Dolensky
