The Greater Alabama Council Pinewood Derby will be May 10, 2008 at Barber Motorsports Park & Museum in Leeds. Registration begins at 10:30 and racing begins at 11:15. The Derby is for First Place District winners only at no charge. Trophies will be awarded in Tiger, Cub (Wolf and Bear), Webelos, and “Show Only” categories. Soft drinks and concessions will be on sale. Rules and specifications for the GAC Pinewood Derby are the same as those found in the Official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby kit.

These rules and specifications are:
CAR SPECIFICATIONS: Width- 2 and 3/4 inches; Length- 7 inches; Weight- not over 5 ounces; Width between wheels- 13/4 inches; Bottom clearance between the car and track- 3/8 inch.
RULES: Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited. The car shall not ride on springs. Only Official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby wheels and axles are permitted. Only Dry lubricant is permitted. Details, such as steering wheel and driver are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width and weight specifications. The car must be free wheeling, with no starting devices. Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it may compete. If, at registration, a car does not pass inspection, the owner will be informed of the reason for failure, and will be given time within the official weigh-in time period to make the adjustment. After final approval, cars will not be reinspected unless the car is damaged in handling or in a race.

Along with these rules and specifications we ask that all Cubs and adults participate with a Scouting Spirit, a sense of fair play, and sportsmanship.
Best of luck to all racers in their District and the Council Derbies.

The Barber Motorsports Museum has floors of vintage motorcycles. I'm not a motorcycle buff, but it was an impressive collection.
